A practical investigation into the Play of Creation – workshop / study day

at Newland House, Edgbaston, Birmingham

For students from Part 4 (Presence of Mind) onwards, i.e. currently studying the modules: presence of mind, action, knowledge or are in the intermediate group

On Sunday 11th June 2017, 9 30am to 4 00 pm

Cost £20 including vegetarian buffet lunch and all refreshments

The great philosophical tradition of India proclaims that the creation is a play or a drama and that every activity, including those of the human race, is governed by Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas, the three Guna (the threefold nature of the energy of creation). Whatever the activity may be, the Guna interplay with our nature.

We naturally live in the world of name and form and we are surrounded by them, even the being we call our self seems to have many names and forms depending on what role we may be playing and what aspect of body, mind and heart we are referring to.

However, this philosophy also proclaims that our true nature or Self is completely free and untouched by this play of creation.

This is an enigmatic and fascinating idea and we shall use the opportunity to take a wholly practical approach to gain a better understanding of these two areas that dominate our lives, the world of consciousness and the world of matter, and hopefully experience a sense of freedom and peace through discussion, reason, and a practical approach to action.

The workshop is on Sunday 11th June 2017. The school will be open from 9am for coffee, tea and biscuits with the workshop starting at 9:30am and finishes at approximately 4pm. The tutor for the day will be Stephen Davy.

The cost for the day to include all refreshments including a beautiful vegetarian lunch is £20.

The effect of a day like this is always light, peaceful and uplifting and it is a marvellous opportunity to practice philosophy in the good company of like minded people.

How our introductory courses work

A tutor presents philosophical ideas, and leads a discussion based on what arises in the group. Being practical rather than academic, the emphasis is on personal knowledge and experience. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test them in practice for themselves, in the light of their own experience.
