‘Freedom’

Over the millennia, in many different ways it is what humanity has strived for, lived for, fought for and died for.

But what is freedom? Of course there is the obvious physical freedom from repression, tyranny and slavery but philosophically it means much more than that.

So throughout the day we will discuss:

  • What is the nature of true freedom?
  • What impedes true freedom, how is it lost?
  • Why does everyone have a need to be free?
  • A traditional holistic view of man
  • Creativity and Freedom
  • What can we control in our life?
  • What can’t we control in our life?
  • How can we avail ourselves of true freedom?

The day will contain practical elements to help us in our discovery of answers to these important issues.

We shall:

  1. Practice and develop the mindful awareness exercise that has already been introduced
  2. Practice very basic calligraphy
  3. Practice simple sounding and listening (starting with basic vowel sounds from the ancient Sanskrit language)

freedom-600All useful practices for bringing the attention into the present moment and allowing the mind to fall still.

The day will begin at 9am for coffee and registration, the workshop will start at 9:30am and finish at approximately 4pm. The cost is £25 with a beautiful vegetarian buffet and all refreshments included.

As always these days, I look forward to spending a warm, friendly, peaceful and (hopefully) enlightening day with you.

The great philosophical tradition of India proclaims that the creation is a play or a drama and that every activity, including those of the human race, is governed by Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas, the three Guna (the threefold nature of the energy of creation). Whatever the activity may be, the Guna interplay with our nature.

We naturally live in the world of name and form and we are surrounded by them, even the being we call our self seems to have many names and forms depending on what role we may be playing and what aspect of body, mind and heart we are referring to.

However, this philosophy also proclaims that our true nature or Self is completely free and untouched by this play of creation.

This is an enigmatic and fascinating idea and we shall use the opportunity to take a wholly practical approach to gain a better understanding of these two areas that dominate our lives, the world of consciousness and the world of matter, and hopefully experience a sense of freedom and peace through discussion, reason, and a practical approach to action.

Our lives are in constant flux and movement, with very little peace. Society and the world in general is full of agitation, confusion and fear.

During our time in the school we have been provided with some very useful tools to bring our own inner world to a more peaceful and steady condition.

The question to ask ourselves is what is behind this world of constant movement?

The day will provide the opportunity to explore what is behind this ever-changing scenery by practising becoming still and realising (making real) our true nature.

The approach will be very easy and relaxed as we take guidance from the wise with regards to some of the following subjects:-

  • Observing the world of the senses
  • Observing the inner world
  • Discrimination
  • Letting go
  • The ever present, present moment.

We shall use some very practical exercises and discerning reason to turn theory into reality.
